Our Honest Review Of Vital Essentials’ Single Source Protein Rabbit Bites

The Meow Place sits down to review Vital Essentials’ single source protein Rabbit Bite treats…

We love single source protein foods. Well, rather, we should say that we love it when our cats eat them.

We first discovered Vital Essentials Rabbit Bites when we (my brother and I) visited the Chuck & Don’s Wayzata, MN location. For those not familiar with Chuck & Don’s, they’re a pet health foods store that has just about every organic or raw pet food you can find. They have around 34 stores throughout Minnesota, Colorado and Wisconsin.

Single source protein treats from Vital Essentials make for a happy, healthy cat.

What does ‘single source protein’ mean?

It means that there’s only one type of protein found in the food or treat. Many cat foods use a combination of meat, byproducts and grains as proteins and fillers. While variety is good, a single source protein food is purer. Single source protein diets can help pets with allergies by eliminating common ingredients that cause those allergies.

These ingredients can be eggs, soy, wheat and so on, but meats like chicken, beef and fish can also be the culprit. This was the case for Misha and Tippy. They’re both food-sensitive to chicken and salmon, poor things.

The things we loved about Vital Essentials Rabbit Bites

First things first… these are treats, not full meals.

Vital Essentials has a line of single source protein freeze-dried treats that include rabbit, minnows, chicken, tuna, salmon and duck. Each treat has only ingredients from that source of protein. For example, the rabbit bites ingredients list has: rabbit, rabbit liver, rabbit kidney and rabbit heart. That’s it.

Tippy is om-nom-nom-ing on some tasty VE treats.

Some of the treats have only one ingredient at all, such as the duck liver, salmon, minnows and tuna. Knowing that there were no additives, fillers or ingredients we couldn’t pronounce in Misha and Tippy’s treats gave us peace of mind. Also, they flippin’ love them!

They’re a crunchy treat, which isn’t surprising given that they’re freeze-dried. Crunchy treats won’t keep your cat’s teeth sparkling clean, but they will help to dislodge food stuck in there. We love hearing the little crunch, crunch sounds of their tiny teeth chewing up their delicious rabbit treats.

One last thing: they’re sourced, packaged and processed in the USA, in Wisconsin, in fact. 🙂

The things we weren’t so happy about

There wasn’t much to complain about other than the price. You get about 0.9 ounces of rabbit bites, and one bag lasts around two weeks if we’re frugal.

While other treat bags from big companies like Meow Mix and Blue Buffalo range from $1-$4 per bag, these ones are more in the range of $5-$9 depending on where you get them. The store price must be cheaper because Amazon is selling them for $8.95 as of today.

Still, you’re getting high quality treats for the price you’re paying. You just need to weigh whether that’s affordable for you or not. If you have multiple cats (as in three or more), it may not be ideal for you to solely purchase these kinds of treats.

How many meows do these treats get?

We gave 4 out of 5 Meows!

Other than the high price, these treats are great. They’re delicious, and they have seven flavor options for even the pickiest of cats. The duck liver and rabbit bites are especially good for cats with food allergies or food sensitivities, as not many cats have problems with these two protein sources.

Vital Essentials’ single source protein Rabbit Bites weigh in at four meows. They’re not perfect, but they’re one of the best and healthiest cat treats out there.

    1. Excellent! Although Misha and Tippy are both food sensitive to chicken, we’ll definitely keep Chicken Hearts treats in mind for future reviews. 🙂

  2. Interesting. I just ran across my first hard freeze dried treats recently and it was so different from what I am used to.. Most freeze dried treats I’ve feed have been very soft and crumbly.

    1. Yeah, these ones are definitely crunchier than what I’m used to, but the cats love both kinds. 🙂 I like crunchier treats better anyways because they help clean the teeth at least a little bit. Soft treats don’t do that. Thanks for commenting!
