Frisky Feline Feature: Meet Mister and Smokes!

Mister and Smokes beat the odds, and now they're the best of friends, living with their hoomans. Get to know them in this week's Frisky Feline Feature.

Thrown out of a car and left to die, Mister was rescued just in time. Then came his brother Smokes!

Mister was thrown out of a moving car when he was 8 weeks old. Smokes had a URI that required round-the-clock care. Read the story of how they pulled through and found their furever home in our latest feature.

I don’t often get emotional when typing up my blog posts. By emotional, I mean I don’t normally get upset. However, I couldn’t help but cry when I read Mister’s story. I even got a little choked up for Smokes too, but you’ll see what I mean in a minute.

Mister and Smokes’ fur mama Danielle wanted to tell her babies’ story. It’s a wholesome and inspiring one, so grab your tissues and steel your hearts – here comes the emotional rollercoaster!

I honestly cried reading about Mister’s beginnings. Can you please tell us how you found him?

Mister Troy was thrown out of a moving car when he was only 8 weeks old. After much needed healing and tender love and care, his mom Danielle nursed him back to health.

I adopted Mister Troy (“Mister” for short) from the Heartland Humane Society in Corvallis, Oregon in 2006. He was eight weeks old. He had been thrown from a car, and he had scrapes and patches of lost hair on his face and ears as a result. Still, he stole my heart. When I held him, he purred and purred and just melted into my arms.

You must have been glad to get him home. Was there any excitement his first night there?

Mister and Smokes eventually learned to get along, despite the difference in age and temperament.

Turns out that Mister had just recently been neutered, and his drugs hadn’t yet worn off. I’d put him in his own room that evening so that he could get used to his new home, and I woke up in the morning to incessant, loud meows (that sound more like “MOW” than “meow”).

This is the Mister [I’ve] come to know and love—vocal, full of personality, but still the most snuggly kitty I’ve ever known! Mister is extremely attached to me. He follows me around, talks to me, and likes to sleep sprawled out on me whenever possible.

Aw, he’s a cuddler! How does he do with other people, given his rough start with humans?

Even after being thrown out of a car as a kitten, Mister Troy is still a lovable, fluffy cat who loves cuddles.

He is afraid of new people at first, but quickly comes around. If I had to sum up his personality in one word, it would be “sweet”. He is truly the sweetest cat. [Mister has] been with me now for almost 11 years, and he hasn’t changed much. He’s healthy, happy, and large, [and he] weighs about 17 lbs. The vet assures me he’s not fat—he’s just a big boy!

How did Smokes come into the picture? Was Mister Troy getting lonely for a companion, or was it something else?

Smokes was the runt of the litter, but he won in a big way when his mom Danielle adopted him.

I moved to Bend with Mister in 2010. In 2013, I joined the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Central Oregon, the area’s only open admission shelter. I have since fostered three litters for HSCO. The first litter is how we ended up with Lil’ Smokey (“Smokes,” for short).

I could never foster cats myself. I’d want to keep them all! How did Lil’ Smokey steal your heart?

Lil' Smokes almost didn't make it, but Danielle's round-the-clock care got him through. Now he calls her mama!

I took in Lil’ Smokes and his mom, brothers, and sister in June of 2016. The kittens were about five weeks old at the time and still nursing. Smokes had a URI [upper respiratory infection], and I ended up having to take special care of him with eye drops and antibiotics, as his eyes would crust shut a couple of times a day.

I think this is why we ended up forming a special bond. He was also the runt and had a difficult time walking around due to his small size. It was pretty cute. When we took the rest of his siblings back to the shelter to be adopted out, we just couldn’t let him go.

How did Mister handle the new addition to the family?

Mister and Smokes have become the best of pals despite their age difference. True love knows no boundaries!

Mister had been an “only” cat for most of his life, so the transition took a while. Now the two nap together, groom each other, and I think Mister is happier with Smokes around.

What have you noticed about the differences between Mister and Smokes’ personalities?

Mister and Smokes are happy in their new family, but it wasn't always rays of sunshine for them. Read their story in this week's Frisky Feline Feature

Smokes is much more independent than Mister. He’s a lap cat only on his own terms, doesn’t like to be held much (although he will tolerate it), and is a very playful kitten. He’ll play with almost anything, but he especially likes the plastic piece from milk [gallon jugs] that you pull off to get the cap off of the milk.

He is also a little food guarder, probably as a result of him being the runt of his litter. Although he’d never hurt you, he does a cute little growl if you get close to him while he’s chowing down.

It’s so good that they’re in a happy, loving home now. Thank you so much for letting us feature you. Mister and Smokes are real charmers!
